Got A Case Of The Mondays? Meditate!

It’s Monday morning and, given your sheer workload volume, you’re feeling: Stressed, anxious, depressed, pissy and tired. Sound familiar? Instead of trolling your coworkers for Xanax, sneak away to the break room for a 10-minute meditation session. Trust us, it's good for you. A recent study by a team of researchers from China and the University of Oregon found that quieting your mind significantly improves your attention span and response to stress. Here’s how:

Body: Meditation boosts your immunity as much as getting a flu shot, according to a study from The University of Wisconsin. They also say that sittin’ still and calming your mind lowers blood pressure and alleviates chronic pain.

Mind: Neuroscientists have discovered that meditators’ brain waves move away from their amygdala where the brain’s fear resides, to the calmer left cortex of the brain (the right cortex is where stress hibernates). In plain language, this small shift decreases negative feelings of stress, depression and anxiety.

Soul: Can’t get your mind off your annoying boss, your controlling Mom, or your past littered with broken romantic relationships? Meditate on the now. When you focus on the present, you can train your mind to control negative thoughts – even silence them completely—and begin to understand that you are not your thoughts. This detachment is the gateway to peace and self-acceptance.

Meditation Musts: Ready for eternal bliss? Here’s what you’ll need:
  • A quiet room.
  • A comfortable place to sit or lie down. Can’t get comfy? Try this Meditation Bench Cushion.
  • Focus. Need help getting there? Listen to the f*ree online radio station, Meditation Music, or follow the f*ree, online guided meditation by yoga master, Sally Kempton.
