Buh-Bye Waxing, Hell-ew Threading

I'm an eyebrow virgin. I’ve never waxed, never plucked, and never been electrolusized. At least, until Tuana Hair Design's Ergun Tercan, wearing a pink western shirt and sporting a faux-hawk, pulled out a spool of white cotton thread, wound it around his fingers, and used it to yank out my hair.
Threading originated in India, the Middle East, or China (depending on whom you ask) and is favored by both Bollywood movie stars and tinseltown’s A-list crowd. The treatment involves twisting and rolling thread along the surface of the skin, entwining your little bitty facial hairs, and lifting them right out of the follicle. Picture the string game, Cat’s Cradle, but on your face. Um, yowch?
Right about now you're wondering, “Why go under the string when I can get a perfectly respectable shape with hot wax?” Well, I didn't walk out of the threading salon with embarrassingly angry splotches over my eyes. Instead, my skin turned a mild pink for just a few minutes, then looked totally normal – critical if you’re going out after your appointment. Not only that, "It won't rip off layers of skin like waxing does." (Ergun's words.) There are no chemicals (always a bonus). The hairs are pulled out in one line (less tweezing). And according to some Ayurvedic docs, waxing (unlike threading) speeds up the development of wrinkles (scaa-ry).
Yes, threading stung a little bit. Yes, my brows will sprout back after a few weeks. But then I’ll have an excuse to visit Ergun again. For those not lucky enough to have a threading salon close by, grab your very own threading kit (complete with instructional DVD) from Seventh Wonder Day Spa.
