Sandpoint, Idaho: Top Spots Where Hip Meets Health

Nestled into the bottleneck of a state known for potatoes and lewd politicians (we’re talking about you, Senator Larry Craig) lies Sandpoint, Idaho - a hip mountain town that offers hiking and biking in the Selkirk Mountains and sea kayaking on the fifth deepest lake in the US, Lake Pend Orielle (pronounced Pond-a-ray). But it’s not all about outdoor sports in Sandpoint – there’s also indulgent spas and tasty grub in the center of town. One word of warning: If you hit the bars, remember to watch out for pervs in the restroom (sorry, Senator – it’s true).
Ride the Mountain: Hop on your mountain bike and explore the 20 miles of cross-country trails at Schweitzer Mountain where the 2006 NORBA (National Off-Road Biking Association) national championships were held. If you’re just into going downhill, ride the chairlift up, then the trails down the 1,700 vertical foot descent.
Munch on This: There’s a reason Eichardt’s Pub, Grill & Coffee House is a local favorite. Try one of the dozens of local beers on tap (we like the pints from Laughing Dog Brewery) and the blackened salmon Caesar salad. If you’re feeling devilish, go garlic fries.
And It Hot Stoned Me: At the third-floor Spa at Seasons, you can get a Swedish-style or Hot Stone rubdown while overlooking the lake - talk about sensory overload. The spa’s chamomile and marine algae body mask is worth every penny.
Crash Here: Stay at the European-style Selkirk Lodge at the base of Schweitzer Mountain Resort, where suites come with kitchenettes and jetted hot tubs. The downstairs Mojo Coyote Café opens early and serves spicy breakfast burritos and dark roasted coffee – perfect nosh before playing outside.
